Maryam Nawaz & Maryam Aurangzeb: Spiritual Sisters

To anyone watching the news in Pakistan, it should come as no surprise that the nation is having trouble both deep and wide. The economy especially is suffering, and as a predictable result, so are the majority of Pakistani public.

The Pakistan Democratic Movement (PDM) has spent well over a year uniting all opposition parties and even “well-intentioned” defectors from the former-ruling Pakistan Tehreek-E-Insaf (PTI) party, with the express purpose to avert disaster and save the poor and impoverished people of the country. PDM is comprised of major parties and even some minor parties with any clout who all came together to remove Prime Minister Imran Khan from office because as they claim, he was doing irreparable and unforgivable damage/harm to the innocent public of Pakistan.

According to their standard rhetoric, he caused inflation and the rising prices of essential commodities because of stupid fiscal policies. The COVID-19 pandemic had no impact on anything according to them, and Khan could easily have done better. They claimed with their combined 30+ years of experience (which obviously have nothing to do with our current situation, ahem), they would fix the economy and improve relations with our international allies — first and foremost the United States. They further maintain of course, that Khan’s claim of US-imposed regime change is entirely false though even their own members (including the now PM Shahbaz Sharif) have admitted the authenticity of Khan’s claims. This was almost all before they took office after removing Khan. Most of them have now actually made statements on international platforms and on live TV stating that former-PM Khan actually did an exemplary job as did his economic team.

Yet one member of PDM, and also Pakistan Muslim League Nawaz (PMLN) has raised my bullshit metre sky high. Well actually its two — I call them MnM. Can you guess who?

Its Maryam Nawaz and Maryam Aurengzeb. Listening to these ladies on TV or reading their words from a variety of source, I have an impulse to laugh while slamming my head into the nearest wall. Then I would like to jump off the nearest high-rise and scream myself to death. Something along those lines, because my mind is literally blown with their mishmash typhoon of rhetoric which is raging across my beloved homeland.

They state their lies and rhetoric with such emotion and confidence that had I lacked a brain, I would be their most heartfelt supporter. My goodness. They began by saying there would be no retribution for political opponents and yet we have seen nights of terror across the nation as hundreds were arrested from their homes without a single knock on the door. A policeman sadly died in this situation as one target opened fire to defend his family against night-time intruders — which are often thieves or dacoits, not police.

They’ve also been quite outspoken critics of the courts, the police, the army, and basically every institution in Pakistan. If you opened up a shop in the last decade, I’m sure they’ve criticized you for destroying our country. They are, on the other hand, staunch and honest patriots who have done no wrong. If a Maryam criticizes and questions the manhood or masculinity of a man, its all well and good. Heaven forbid we have some semblance of equality and she is questionned in turn.

If a Maryam finds that a news network is biased against her, or reporting honestly, she’ll have them removed from the room and shut down the channel. Whatever happened to journalistic integrity, free media and all that? According to a leaked audio, she’s “managing the channels, just don’t try telling her how to do it”. Allegedly, this was a conversation with her father.

I didn’t bother identifying one or the other mostly, because if you actually look and listen to them — its hard to say if they’re one or two. They’re are soulmates in the most disturbing sense of the word, put on Earth to show the rest of us that there is no limit to lies or stupidity.

I could go on, and I would love to, but this is quite enough for one day.
